Walter Hood
Creative Director and Founder of Hood Design Studio · USA
Walter J. Hood, a multidisciplinary designer from Charlotte, NC, is globally recognized for his contributions to art, landscape architecture, urbanism, and research. He founded Hood Design Studio in Oakland, CA, in 1992 and now serves as its Creative Director.
His passion for landscape and urbanism stems from their broad, democratic scope, offering opportunities for engagement beyond the constraints of architecture. By infusing African American cultural arts into his design philosophy, he has established a distinct voice that reshapes spaces to reflect contemporary needs without erasing their histories.
A former professor at UC Berkeley and former educator at Harvard, Walter is the author of Black Landscapes Matter. His many accolades include the 2019 MacArthur Fellowship, the 2021 Architectural League President’s Medal, the 2023 WSJ Magazine Innovator in Design Award, and most recently, the 2025 Thomas Jefferson Foundation Medal in Architecture.
